LANE COUNTY, Ore. -- A Lane County woman is asking for help in dealing with hundreds of cats on a property she says she lives on.

KaSandra Riley said there are close to 400 cats on the property located between Eugene and Veneta.

She said the problem has been ongoing for years, and a woman who lives at the home has been in the hospital the past two weeks.

"There is no way she can keep them," Riley said. "She's 80 years old, right now fighting for her life in the hospital. There is no way we can keep them here. They need to go. They have to go."

Many cats have died over the years, Riley said, and some are sick. Many aren’t neutered or spayed. She also said the house is unsafe for anyone to live in.

Riley said she’s reached out to Greenhill Humane Society and Lane County Animal Services to help get rid of the cats.

Officials at Greenhill said because many of the cats are feral, they can't bring them to their shelter. They said they are working with the county to find the best solutions for both animals and humans.

County spokeswoman Devon Ashbridge said they approached the property owner two years ago to see if they would allow them to trap, spay/neuter and release the cats, but the homeowner declined.

Ashbridge said they are now investigating to see if the house is safe.

Riley has been feeding the cats and giving some medications.

"I have no money to take care of these cats, and I don't want to watch them starve. I can't see them starving, I just can't," Riley said.
