LAKESIDE, Ore. – A woman who killed her passenger in a DUII crash earlier this year in Coos County was sentenced on Monday.

Melissa Hill, 31, will serve six years and three months in prison for her role in the fatal crash. Her driver’s license has also been revoked permanently, and she will serve three years of post-prison supervision. She is not eligible for early release from prison.

On March 20, Hill was driving a Jeep Cherokee in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area of Lakeside when it went off a sand road and landed upside down in the water. Several ATV riders stopped and helped get two of the occupants out of the Jeep.

However, 24-year-old Hailey Vincent remained trapped in the vehicle. A Coos County sheriff’s deputy got the vehicle out of the water, but CPR and the efforts of the arriving medical team were unsuccessful. Vincent was declared dead at the scene.

Hill pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter, third-degree assault and driving under the influence of intoxicants. Charges of reckless driving and recklessly endangering another person were dismissed.
