EUGENE, Ore. -- A woman who stole a car with a baby inside it last August was sentenced to a year and a half in prison on Wednesday.

Faith Rhoads was charged with first-degree custodial interference, unlawful delivery of methamphetamine, unauthorized use of a vehicle, first-degree theft, reckless endangerment, and failure to perform the duties of a driver when property is damaged.

Deputy District Attorney Robert Lane said the maximum sentence Rhoads could have received was 70 months, or just shy of six years, since they previously charged her with kidnapping in the second degree.

But Lane said they dropped that charge because it would have been too risky in court.

"The defense was going to claim that she was unaware that the infant was in the vehicle, and if the jury had agreed with them on the remaining charges if she was convicted, she would've only received probation," Lane said.

Lane said the prosecution added first-degree custodial interference in place of kidnapping.

Neighbors who live near the place where the incident occurred were surprised Rhoads was sentenced with 18 months.

"I'm a big believer in justice, so it probably isn't enough time," neighbor Tim Maples said. "Everybody seems to be getting away with everything around here."

It all began Aug. 14, 2019, when a car with a baby inside it was stolen from a driveway in Eugene. The car was stolen at about 4:30 p.m. in the 500 block of Langers Lane.

About 20 minutes later, Rhoads crashed the car into a fence near Spencer Creek Road and Fawn HIlls Drive and ran from the scene.

The baby, who was 1 year old at the time, wasn't injured, authorities said.

Rhoads, who was 18 at the time of the crime, was arrested on a warrant about a week later.
