Eugene, OR -- The South Eugene track and field program will graduate 12 seniors this spring. The team boasts four graduates that will move on to NCAA Division 1 programs.

The first of the four seniors is the OSAA 6A reigning championship in the 200 meter. Elise Unruh-Thomas started running at the early age of five. Elise accepted a full-ride scholarship with the Washington State Cougars.

"I've always wanted to go to the Olympics," Unruh-Thomas said. "I've always tried working hard and to finally find a place that fits me is just really exciting."

Simon Park will be taking his 2017 pole vaulting championship across the country to Harvard this coming fall. Park plans to study economics while he juggles his track schedule.

"When I started I never really actualy thought I'd be a college athlete so it's actually pretty amazing to think I'm going to be competing with some one of the best teams in the country," Park said.

Maya Kaperick started competing in track and field only two years ago during her sophomore year. She signed with the University of Minnesota to pole vault. She hopes to advance her skills at the next level.

"I hope there's a couple parts of my technique that I'm still waiting on," Kaperick said. "If I can get those done I'm hoping to see a couple feet increase in my PR. I'm excited to see how that goes."

Rounding out the list of division 1 signees for the Axe is Ian Twyman. Twyman signed with the Santa Clara University last week.

"It feels like it's the right progression," Twyman said. "It feels like I'm ready for it so I'm excited."

Ian will not only run some distance on the track and field team, he'll also dress on the Broncos cross country team.
