Corvallis, Ore. -- Oregon State had a revenge rematch against Gonzaga in the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a Sweet 16 berth on the line. It was a familiar storyline, straight out of 2015, when the Zags beat the Beavers to advance to the regional. In 2019, the script flipped.
Oregon State got the best of Gonzaga, grinding out yet another win at Gill Coliseum and setting up a top billing matchup with no. 1 seed Lousiville.
Gonzaga held a two point lead on Oregon State at halftime, with the Beavers struggling to get into an offensive rhthym early, but still paced by junior guard Mikayla Pivec. After the break, Destiny Slocum began taking over in the 3rd quarter. She had two three pointers towards the break before the 4th and showed an aggression at the rim that the Beavers were missing.
OSU ended the 3rd quarter on a 7-0 run over the last 90 seconds and held a one point lead into the final stretch. Then it began to tighten up. Gonzaga's Zykera Rice caused a jumpball on Jo Grymek and then hit a jumper on the other side to take the lead with 6:50 left in the game.
The Beaver offense meandered slightly until Mikayla Pivec charged the hoop and put away a basket to go with a foul. Oregon State took a three point lead with two minutes to play. Slocum then kicked the ball out to Corosdale for a three pointer to take a four point lead with 1:20 remaining. With a margin of five points, it fell to senior Katie McWilliams to ice her free throws. In her final game at Gill Coliseum, she hit both.
There was some intrigue late, as Jessie Loera hit a three pointer to come within five, and Zykera Rice doing the same following two more OSU free throws. With 4.6 seconds left, the Zags were within four points, but that's as close as they would get.
What comes next is a Sweet 16 matchup in Albany, N.Y., against top-seeded Lousiville, who defeated Michigan 71-50 in the second round.
