Corvallis, OR. -- The Oregon State football team was back on the practice field today after the emotionally draining loss to Hawaii.

Despite not scoring in the second half against the Rainbow Warriors, the Beavers looked crisp on offense. That’s in large part to the passing attack of senior quarterback Jake Luton and junior wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins. Hodgins ranks sixth nationally and first in the Pac-12 Conference with 266 receiving yards over the first two games of the season. His 16 receptions are also good for a tie for sixth nationally and a tie for first in the Pac-12.

However, offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren expressed his concern that Luton might be locked on to Hodgins too much in games instead of exploring other options downfield. That’s something they’ve acknowledged and will be working to fix against Cal Poly.

"Hodgins is someone [Luton] relies on,” said Lindgren. “Those guys have some great timing. But at the same time when you take Hodgins away and [Luton] is passing up one or two to get to him, that’s a problem. He has to trust what the defense gives him and make that play."

“There's just a couple throws that I don't miss ever. I missed them and that sucks,” said Luton. “It really puts a bad taste in your mouth. But that's football. I'm not perfect and no one on the team is perfect."

Defensively, the Beavers suffered a huge loss with the injury to outside linebacker Addison Gumbs. Smith announced Monday that Gumbs is out for the season after the redshirt sophomore tore his right ACL against Hawaii. It’s a huge loss for this Beaver defense and a heartbreaking circumstance for Gumbs, considering he tore the ACL in his left knee two years ago at Oklahoma.

The Beavers will try and get their first win of the season this Saturday against the Cal Poly Mustangs. Kickoff is at 1:15 p.m. at Reser Stadium.
