Eugene, Ore. – After starting junior varsity at quarterback and playing back-up for varsity, Cade Crist has taken the starting spot at Thurston High School his junior year.
"To be a starting quarterback you really have to be disciplined and you have to come in and work hard and you always have to be positive for your teammates,” said Crist. “I mean, just be out there every day looking to win, looking to help the whole team."
But unlike most high school players, Crist didn’t climb the ranks from pee-wee football.
Cade said, "I started playing football in the 8th grade. I didn't really start till later, I didn't enjoy football until then and when one of my buddies asked me if I wanted to come out and play. I just had fun with it every since."
Along with football, Cade plays basketball and baseball, with the diamond sport being his favorite.
"As catcher in baseball, you can see everything and you're kind of in control and you're always touching the ball and that's what was attractive to me,” said Crist. “I always got to go out and have an opportunity to make a difference in the play."
Through seven games as a starter, Crist has led the Colts to a 5-2 record. He’s also etched his name into the Thurston record book, throwing for the most passing yards in a game with 481 against Crater in week three.
"I didn't really realize it until the day after when my coach texted me and said hey you broke the record. It didn't feel like a huge game, but I guess it was," said Cade. "I felt really good about it. I mean it was exciting to go out there and break a record cause you know, you're always looking to do something that somebody else before you hasn't done."
Despite the year he's having on the gridiron, baseball may always have his heart.
Crist said, "Right at this point id probably go with the baseball side of things. I mean I've played for as long as I can remember. And it's always been kind of what I've wanted to do in life, I just enjoy it."
Cade Crist's performance in baseball has also been spotlighted by Baseball Northwest.
