Hoops Roundup: Ducks win, Beavers lose in southern road games

Oregon stole won away from Arizona, while Oregon State ran out of time against Arizona State.

Eugene, Ore. -- On a road trip to Arizona, the Oregon schools split results, with the Ducks beating Arizona 59-54 in the McKale Center and Arizona State getting the best of the Beavers 70-67.

Oregon's matchup with the Wildcats saw the return of forward Kenny Wooten, who was sidelined the last four games with a broken jaw. Wooten provided a spark of energy off the bench, posting a 5 point, 7 rebound, 1 block line on the night. The Ducks were led in scoring by forward Paul White who has stepped up since the loss of Bol Bol, Oregon's top scorer. White had 16 points on 7-10 shooting while grabbing 5 rebounds. Victor Bailey Jr. also finished in double digits, going 3-5 from three and scoring 13 points.

The Ducks led by as much as 9 with 3:13 to play, but a quick two and three pointer brought the margin to 4. After losing a lead late to UCLA last week, Oregon showed no such worry in a hostile Arizona environment. Freshman Louis King and junior Payton Pritchard both connected on their free throws and the Ducks left with a win in hand. Next on the list is Arizona State at the Wells Fargo Arena. That game will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network at 6:30 pm.

Over in Tempe, Oregon State came up too little, too late, despite a furious second half comeback against the Sun Devils. The Beavers played arguably their worst first half of the season, shooting a mere 25.9% from the field, yet still only going into halftime down by 8 points. In the second, the lead ballooned to 18 for Arizona State, before the Beavs started to chip away. ASU's lead was still at 12 inside 4 minutes, but three point shooting that had been, up to that point, nonexistent for OSU started to arrive.

With 22 seconds left, the Beavers had chopped the lead down to just a single point. Arizona State's inbound was mishandled and recovered by OSU's Tres Tinkle, who tried to pass it off to Zach Reichle, but the exchange led to the Sun Devils regaining possession. Zylan Cheatham went to the line and sunk two free throws, forcing the Beavs to make a last second three to send the game to overtime. Ethan Thompson's attempt airballed and OSU's unbeaten streak in conference play ended. Thompson and Tinkle finished with 21 points apiece.
