EUGENE, Ore. -- For the Sheldon softball seniors being alone at home isn't the same as being in the dugout.

“I’m missing so much of it and it was such a big part of my life," senior Rylee Valentine.

The five Sheldon softball seniors are missing the chance to repeat as 6A state champs,

“There was a lot of crying involved when we found out the season was canceled," senior Jordan Henderson.

The players say reaching that pinnacle in 2019 gives them some comfort and a sense of completion.

“We went out on a bang," Henderson said. "I can go into college knowing we ended out on top.”

The Irish went from a losing program just four years ago to a powerhouse program.

“Everybody had each other’s backs on and off the field," Valentine. "If anybody needed help in the school, the upperclassmen would help them.”

The seniors say their time at Sheldon gave them a lifetime of memories.

“We always kind of hyped each other up on the way to games," senior Camille Leach said. "It was just us helping each other out and getting definitely into spirit.”

It was that winning culture that turned a teammate become a sister and team into family.

”They’re also helping to set a standard of excellence for this program," Faulconer said. "The next group of kids know what’s possible. They’ve seen it and they have an idea of just how hard it is to achieve and how much work it takes and they’re willing to do that.”
