Corvallis, OR. -- Midweek games have had Oregon State’s number in 2019. Prior to Tuesday night’s 4-3 victory over Portland, the Beavers had won two of their last eight midweek games. But with a bases-clearing, three-run double from George Mendazona and six scoreless innings from Nathan Burns, Oregon State changed the narrative.

In the seventh inning, Mendazona crushed a 1-1 pitch into the right field gap, scoring Adley Rutschman, Tyler Malone and Alex McGarry. The go-ahead double was the deciding factor.

"I was able to put a good swing on it and put it in the gap,” said Mendazona. “And McGarry got such a good jump from first base so him being able to score was awesome. I was just glad I was able to come through for the guys tonight.”

Nathan Burns also came through for the Beavers, as he recorded his second win of the season. The sophomore right-hander entered the game during the third in relief of starter Jake Pfennings, allowing one hit and zero runs.

“I thought Burns was just outstanding. I went in there after and said ‘hey bud we needed men on the mound tonight.’ He has struggled this year and I'm so proud of him,” said Oregon State head coach Pat Bailey. “I thought he just threw great and he's the reason why we won tonight."

Oregon State will hit the road to the Bay Area for a three-game series at Stanford. The series opener is slated for Friday night at 6:05.
