SURPRISE, Ariz. – A six-run eighth inning pushed the second-ranked Oregon State baseball team to a 10-8 come-from-behind victory over Ohio State Friday afternoon at Surprise Stadium.

The Beavers opened the eighth inning down two and loaded the bases. They pulled to within one when Adley Rutschman hit a sacrifice fly to center. Two batters later, and with runners on the corners after a fielder’s choice, Jack Anderson dropped a single down the left field line to tie the game at six.

Zak Taylor continued the inning when reaching on an error by Ohio State second baseman Brady Cherry – his second of the inning – to give the Beavers the lead for good. Kyle Nobach added to the lead with a run-scoring single, and scored himself when Steven Kwan laced a two-run triple to right center to cap the inning.

Oregon State reliever Kevin Abel was sharp in 4 1/3 innings, striking out 10 while allowing five hits and three runs. He gave way to Jake Mulholland after the second home run of the game by Conner Pohl. Mulholland picked up the final two outs with the Beavers up two, earning his second save of the season.

Abel, meanwhile, earned the win to improve to 1-0.

The Beavers (6-0 overall) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second thanks to a two-run double by Taylor. But the Buckeyes (4-2) scored four in the third – Pohl’s first home of the game highlighting the frame.

Oregon State equaled the score with a pair of runs in the third but Ohio State scored solo runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.

Neither starter figured in the decision. Sam Tweedt started for the Beavers and allowed five hits and five runs in four innings. Ryan Feltner began the game on the mound for Ohio State and scattered six hits and four runs in six innings.

Rutschman and Nick Madrigal each posted two hits to lead the Beavers offensively. Kwan, Rutschman and Taylor all had two RBI.
