Corvallis, OR -- Oregon State football held its first scrimmage of the fall over the weekend.

It gave coaches and players a chance to see what they need to work on moving forward in fall camp.

Two areas of concern were OSU's run defense and sack allowance.

The Beavers allowed 281.8 rushing yards per game ranking second worst in all of Division I last season. They also allowed allowed 4.00 sacks per game which put them at the bottom in all of FBS.

"We've talked about run defense for a long time," head coach Jonathan Smith said. "I thought our run defense was better on Saturday. I think the offensive sack avoidance was better. We've made some strides there."

Another bright spot from the live-action scrimmage was the lack of turnovers on the offensive side.

"We didn't get many turnovers," Smith said. "Well that's a good thing on offense. Defensively we want to create some more. It's always a work in progress."

The team's next scrimmage is set for Saturday, August 17, which is also Family Fun day.

OSU opens up the season on Friday, August 30, at home against Oklahoma State.
