CORVALLIS, Ore -- The Beavers secured their first victory of the 2019 season in convincing fashion with a lopsided 45-7 final score against the Cal Poly Mustangs.

There were a lot of touchdowns and a lot happy Oregon State fans. Offensively, the Beavers scored their first two touchdowns thanks to the passing duo that is Jake Luton and Isaiah Hodgins. Luton also connected with Champ Flemings on two touchdowns in the first half, which tied the Oregon State record for most touchdown passes in a single half with four.

“Jake just trusted me," said Flemings. "He put the ball up. The defender did go up and try and pick it off but I just felt like I could out jump him. So I jumped up there and was able to track the ball with my eyes and make the catch.”

Despite running back Jermar Jefferson’s absence, Artavis Pierce and BJ Baylor picked up the run game with ease. Both players combined for 191 yards.

The OSU defense played lights out as well. Oregon State held the Mustangs to just 7 points while forcing two turnovers.

"The way Tim Tibesar and that staff have prepared these guys is impressive because they’ve been dramatically different," said head coach Jonathan Smith. "And I think we put good plans together and we’ve continued to improve each week, executing those plans.”

When the Beaver players were heading into the lockeroom after the win, Corvallis could feel the energy and see the emotion on their faces.

"It feels good to get a win, especially back home," said defensive back Jalen Moore. "A a win is a win. No matter what the score is. It builds confidence knowing we came together as a team and finished.”

OSU enters the bye week with a 1-2 record. The Beavers will prepare for Pac-12 play as they host the Stanford Cardinal September 28 at Reser Stadium.
