Corvallis, OR. -- The Oregon State Beavers once again kick their season off against a quality foe. Last year the Beavers made the trip to Columbus Ohio, to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes in Ohio Stadium (The Horseshow). This season, the Beavs will host the Oklahoma State Cowboys in Reser Stadium Friday, August 30th.
OSU's defense over the last couple of years has been an emphasis for improvement. The Beavers have added a number of key transfers at linebacker, and some junior college additions in the secondary to sure up their deficiencies. Throughout fall camp, the unit has looked much stronger and physical, but the true test will be when they line up against the Cowboys' offense Friday night.
"It's a good challenge to see where we at," said defensive lineman Jordan Whittley. "You know it's always a good stepping stone to see if we're always going to be that physical aggressive team that we want to be coming into the fall, or if we know we need to make some changes and go back after the first game."
The Beavers will be without two key players in week one; receiver Trevon Bradford and linebacker Andrzej Hughes-Murray will both be out with feet injuries. Bradford has returned to practice after having offseason surgery, and is expected to be clear soon. We have not been given a timetable on Hughes-Murray's injury. Safety, Jalen Moore is a game time decision (ankle injury).
The one remaining question on the defense is the starting corner position opposite Isaiah Dunn. Head coach Jonathan Smith said that decision will also be made game time depending on what set the offense is in; but both Juco talent Nahshon Wright and true freshman Jojo Forest will see playing time.
Defensive coordinator, Tim Tibesar said "Obviously we've got a lot of new faces that are going to be making their, you know first game experience at Oregon State. And we're going against a really quality opponent on national television, so we're really excited about what we can do, and the opportunity we have on friday night."
The game will be aired on Fox Sports 1 at 7:30 p.m.
