Eugene, Ore. -- Oregon football has hired Tim DeRuyter to be the Ducks new defensive coordinator. DeRuyter has been in the same position at Cal for the past four seasons, working with head coach Justin Wilcox and splitting playcalling duties with Peter Sirmon in 2020.

DeRuyter improved Cal's defense under Wilcox, taking a league and nation's worst unit to one of the most stout defenses in the Pac-12. In 2019, the Golden Bears were a top 25 unit nationally in passing yards allowed, total defense and 21st in sacks. Since 2018, Cal's five NFL Draft selections have all come on the defensive side of the ball.

Oregon opened their search for a new defensive coordinator after Andy Avalos left the job to become the head coach at Boise State. Some other candidates for the Ducks DC job included Mississippi State defensive coordinator Zach Arnett, Atlanta Falcons defensive assistant Tosh Lupoi and former Texas defensive coordinator Chris Ash.
