Hillsboro, Ore. -- The Lake Oswego football team left Hillsboro Stadium 6A State Champions. It was a thrilling back and forth contest between two talented high school football programs. KEZI 9 Sports reporter Robbie Fuelling recaps the competitive championship game between the Sheldon Fighting Irish and the Lake Oswego Lakers.
If you weren't out in Hillsboro today for this 6A State Championship game...don't sweat because I'm about to break it down for you. It was a back and forth nail biting contest between two great HS football programs. But in the end the Lake Oswego Lakers defeated the Sheldon Fighting Irish, 34-27. Big time plays and big time players. The 6A State Championship was one to remember. Down 10 at halftime...Sheldon quarterback Michael Johnson Jr. led the Irish to the go ahead lead with 5 minutes to play in the 4th quarter. They had it won.
But it was the ensuing 7 play, 75-yard touchdown drive that turned the Lakers into State Champions.
"I went in there," said Lake Oswego's Jackson Laurent. "Got all the linemen together. And said guys this is something you'll never forget! This is the game winning drive for the state championship so let's make it happen."
One player who stepped up and balled out was Laker wide receiver Casey Filkins. He had 5 touchdowns on the night, including the game winner....
"I put my heart and soul into this game," Filkins described. "I can't even explain how it feels to do this for my team and how happy I am for my coaches and the team...I can't even explain it."
Lake Oswego got its 2nd State championship in school history. But the Sheldon Fighting Irish had an incredible season topped with a memorable championship performance.
"I'm just really proud of my kids," Sheldon head coach Josh Line explained. "For the season they had and how hard they played today. I think it was indicative of who they are and what they're about. And I'm proud to be their coach."
