showers. high in the 60s in our oregon on fire coverage... senator jeff merkley says the forest service is not as prepared as it should be for wildfire season. the senator was at the department of interior's hearing in washington d.c.. kezi nine news reporter daijah peterson is live outside of the lane regional air protection agency in springfield... with more on what the senator had to say. daijah? i'm near a wooded area because wildfires commonly occur in settings like this. and the cause of a wildfire varies, but we usually know them start from dryness. senator merkley wants us to focus our attention more into wildfires... he's been working on getting the national guard trained to fight wildfires. senator merkley is pushing them to use 600 million dollars in savings to treat forests before a wildfire hits. he's asking for more thinning and controlled burns, and he thinks this will also help the forest service prepare for fires that are happening earlier in the year. (1:05) they are adjusting. we just don't know if they're adjusting fast enough.the fire season has gotten so much longer here. we are already with major fires having been burning in oregon and it's the month of may and it used to be fire season started in july.(1:20) he says there's several hundred members that have already gone through training. and another 130 will be trained by july. live in springfield...
