and the university of many kids are hard at work this summer -- making sure they keep up their reading skills.. the genesis reading academy is sponsored by the oregon community foundation and the university of oregon. the goal is to make sure kids can continue to develop new reading skills when schools out. it's the second year and they've nearly doubled in size. right now about 60 kids are attending -- many of them are experiencing poverty. mckenzie meline/ instructor says "its a really great opportunity to give back to the community but as well as support those students who are at risk or having some difficulties with reading to provide them with that additional support over the summer when there might be that summer slide when they may not be doing much reading over the summer so this gives them intensive instruction to help overcome that" trt 19 it's a 6 week reading program and the kids attend from 8:15 until around noon. they have reading classes and get breakfast and lunch thanks to a partnership with
