50s. since the mass shooting at umpqua community college in 2015... the umpqua strong run has been more than just a fundraiser. for the roseburg's been a symbol of remembrance -- and a way to honor to the victims. but as kezi 9 news reporter evita garza explains... this year's run is canceled... and organizers are struggling to move forward. nick campbell participated in the umpqua strong run for the first time last year. he says his expereince made him realize how much it takes to put on such a huge event& and has even decided to become an umpqua strong board member. nick campbell, umpqua strong: i know what it did for me. it made me want to be involved locally. just thinking about who i am as an individual and wanting to participate more. i wanted to give back? the annual umpqua strong walk held at stewart park in roseburg is a way to honor the victims of the 2015 ucc shooting while raising money for the community. in the last three years& the event has raised close to 120 thousand dollars for scholarships and other organizations in roseburg. but&officials say they are unable to host the event this year due to a lack of volunteers. they say they have no trouble getting crews the day of and the day before& with more than 100 voulnteers showing up to help each year. officals tell me they lack volunteers on the planning committee, with only four people committing to help this year. lynette mcallister, umpqua strong board member: it was hard making that decision and we wanted it to be as successful as last year and it needs to be successful by planning in a couple of days and putting it on. evita: despite canceling this year event&officials from umpqua strong say theye already planning to hold the event next year&and hopefully filling this entire park? mcallister tells me they are already receiving feedback from the community about cancelling the event and many are disappointed.?i use the opportunity to get involved in the community and give back&but as an opportunity to figure out if i could run a 5k and i couldn not? but&with planning now in full swing, the organization hopes people will help prepare for another successful event and come back every year from now on&like nick campbell. reporting in roseburg, evita garza kezi 9
