Sen. Ron Wyden hosts abortion rights rally in Eugene

EUGENE, Ore. -- U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden hosted a rally outside of Eugene's Planned Parenthood on Tuesday to speak out against the recent tightening of abortion restrictions in states such as Texas.

Recently, a six-week abortion ban was put in place in Texas after the Supreme Court ruled not to block it. It has been deemed one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the nation.

Wyden said his main goal is to ensure laws like those don't spread to Oregon and beyond.

“We are not going to be silenced. We are not going to the sidelines,” Wyden said. “We are going to stand up and push back every step of the way until everywhere in this country makes sure that there's a right to legal and safe abortion."

Wyden said he'd like to see new legislation to replace some of the rules that make the ones in Texas possible.

Though this event was planned through several members of the community, Planned Parenthood of  Southwestern Oregon helped organize it. Amy Handler, Planned Parenthood chief strategy officer, said this is an issue that has a wide impact.

“Abortion impacts all of us and reproductive health impacts all of us. Every person either has an abortion story or knows someone and loves someone who had an abortion,” Handler said, “We need to make sure that abortion remains legal."
